Why sank titanic

What was the Captain doing? Not on the Bridge? In dangerous waters, with possible icebergs? Sounds like an intentional accident! Ship going 22 knots!!!!! Again, where was this experienced Captain? Did Captain Smith give the order to go flank speed????? If so, why? OR, did something happen to the Captain and the Bridge was controlled by someone, other then Captain Smith???

Something to think about, hmmmm? I am quite convinced that the speed with which the Titanic sank after hitting the iceberg was due to the weakening of the plates because of the fire in the Bunker No 6. The spontaneous coal fire had broken out three days before the ship sailed and was only put out 3 days later. All the engineers knew about this but were told to keep their mouths shut. Capt Smith had ample warning about the icebergs and could have slowed down or altered course earlier but he ploughed on, mainly to do what he was told by Ismay and because altering course would have used up more coal There was coal strike in the UK then.

At the inquirtry Lord Mersey was reluctant to let the stokers speak about the fire as he said it was not relevant. Capt Smith should really have been tried for reckless endangerment of his passengers. I am amazed that this has never been brought into public debate and still people are trotting out new TV progs on the Titanic. From my viewing of comparison photographs it is the Olympic on the bottom after the terrible 12th.

They let it sit there and Sink.. Had a hole in the Bow. Had the capability to do almost 19 knots astern , But stops and sank.. Full Astern could have delayed the sinking.. There has been no mention of this ,,I find it disturbing.. I find it disturbing none of those experts ask that question..

The lookouts had no binoculars. At a later inquiry into the sinking, a lookout on the Titanic said binoculars might have helped them spot and dodge the iceberg in time. No matter what caused the Titanic to sink, such a massive loss of life could probably have been avoided if the ship had carried sufficient lifeboats for its passengers and crew. But the White Star liner left Southampton with only 20 lifeboats, the legal minimum, with a total capacity of 1, people.

Though Maurice Clarke, the civil servant who inspected the Titanic in Southampton, recommended it carry 50 percent more lifeboats, his handwritten notes at the time later revealed that he felt his job would be threatened if he did not give the famous ship the go-ahead to sail.

Due to the chaos that ensued after the Titanic struck an iceberg, the 20 lifeboats departed the ship with some empty seats, leaving more than 1, people to perish in the frigid ocean waters.

Doesn't it make any sense? Feb 21, We're glad you enjoyed the Wonder, isaac! Jan 15, Thanks for sharing, Laney! Hello Dec 21, It explains the main gist of things, while not making it paragraphs upon paragraphs long. Also, the captain got orders from the company, and was pressured by crew mates to up speed and get fast on course, but other than that, everything's great. The Titanic was the sister ship of the H.

Olympic was in service for 24 years. The White Star Line owned the sisters. White Star Line started in and ended in due to bankruptcy.

The reason why Titanic sank was due to collision with an iceberg that struck the starboard right side. Thats not all why it sank. The crew didn't have binoculars either as they were trapped in a room without a key. Cameron Roberts Mar 19, This high-speed impact was the start of the disaster. Most often, for many commonly used structural materials, impact at extremely high speeds result in brittle fracture without any yielding or plastic deformation.

This is a type of catastrophic failure in structural materials, the causes of which include low temperature, high impact loading, and high sulfur content. You guessed it right! On the night of the Titanic disaster, all these three factors were present.

The water temperature was below freezing, the Titanic was traveling at a high speed on impact with the iceberg, and the hull steel contained high levels of sulfur. It is here where the chunk of iron discovered during the expedition played a major role in providing the hint that brittle fracture of the hull steel contributed to the disaster.

The condition of the edges of the recovered piece of steel was noted to be jagged, almost shattered like broken china and sharp upon cleaning it. This brittle fracture of hull steel is probably what the survivors of the disaster then described as a loud noise that sounded like breaking china.

Today, typical high-quality ship steel is more ductile and deforms rather than breaks [1]. Astonishingly, scientists discovered that the metal pieces showed no evidence of bending or deformation, they simply shattered! This is a highly popular test to measure the brittleness of a material. It is run by holding the specimen against a steel backing and striking it with a kg pendulum with a 0.

A piece of modern, high-quality steel was tested along with the coupon from the hull steel. If one had a powerful microscope to zoom in at the dimensions of order or micrometers, you would see that steel shows a grain structure, as shown in Figure 4. High sulfur content disrupts the grain structure of steel, leading to an increase in its brittleness. While the material is normally quite ductile, the addition of oxygen causes the material to transition from ductile to brittle in nature.

This proved the plausibility of brittle fracture of the hull steel. The lower section of the Titanic was divided into sixteen major watertight compartments that could easily be sealed off if part of the hull was punctured and leaking water. These watertight compartments, which made the ship designers claim that the ship was unsinkable, were only watertight horizontally.

The tops of these compartments were open, and the walls extended only a few feet above the waterline [3]. In order to contain water within the damaged compartments, it was imperative that the walls of the watertight compartments positioned across the width of the ship be a few feet taller.

Although this is not the reason why the Titanic sank, without this design flow it would have slowed down the sinking process, possibly allowing enough time for nearby ships to help.

The collision with the iceberg damaged the hull portion of six of these sixteen compartments, and the compartments were immediately sealed. But as the water filled these compartments, the ship began to pitch forward from the weight of the water in this area of the ship and the compartments began to spill over into adjacent compartments, due to the horizontal watertight nature. The bow compartments were extensively flooded, and subsequently, the entire ship was flooded, causing the Titanic to be rapidly pulled below the waterline.

The watertight compartments, rather than countering the damage done by the collision with the iceberg, contributed towards accelerating the disaster by keeping the flood waters in the bow of the ship. Without the compartments, the Titanic would have remained horizontal as the incoming water would have spread out.
