Hey there kia magentis optima USA , the speedometer is jumping around in drive, up 20kmh in 1 sec, then swing back down and in park, at zero, goes to 30 then back down. I have an intermittent check engine light with a P — vehicle speed sensor A. Viewing 13 replies - 1 through 13 of 13 total.

Does the VSS affect the transmission as well? September 27, at am Hayden Participant. Let us know. October 16, at am October 16, at pm EricTheCarGuy Keymaster.

Very wierd EatonEmployee Registered User. Click to expand These cars don't have speedometer cables they are electronic. First thing I would do is check the connector to the sensor on the transmission.
When it isn't making a good connection this will happen. I wish I could describe which sensor it is, mine has yellow on it and looks unique. Could be I believe the electronic sensor actually take the place of the cable in that is attaches at the same place a normal cable would attach to, but engages the output shaft teeth and transfers that RPM into a pulse the EEC can then output to the gauge. Perhaps some of the teeth on the speedo gear are stripped and making the reading jump all over the place.
It could also be the motor in the gauge cluster is just getting old and will not keep a steady MPH, I had to gently tap on my gauge cluster for a while to get my Speedo to start reading anything, then it would be fine until the car stoppped again. Just pull the connector apart and see how it looks.
To a point you may be able to clean it. If I need to replace the cable, where can I get one for my '54 Olds 98 holiday hrdtp…or do they have universal cables that will work for my car…or…shops that will rebuilt or make one for me…?
All help is appreciated, thanks. If an internet search proves unproductive, try picking up some street rod magazines. Companies that specialize in these types of parts advertise there.
The cable is the most likely candidate. There used to be a universal cable available from Champ or Help if my memory serves me correctly. Speedometer Needle Bounces Scenario: while you are driving, your speedometer needle abruptly goes up by 10 miles per hour or more, then swings back down sharply. This continues the entire time you are driving, with the needle bouncing between different speeds even when you are drivin g steadily.
The speedometer indicator gauge may come on if the car has one. Possible problems: if it is an older car that has a cable for the speedometer, the cable may be damaged and the wire inside it broken or bent. If the vehicle has an electronic gauge, the cause may be a connectivity problem on the instrument cluster harness. The gauge itself could have stopped working. Speedometer Needle not Moving Scenario: you turn your vehicle on, and the speedometer needle does not move once you begin driving.
You turn the vehicle off and back on and it still does not move. Other gauges work fine on the dash. The check engine indicator light may come on or there may be no indicator lights. Possible problems: the speedometer cable is damaged or broken. The speed sensor has gone bad. The speedometer could need re-calibrating due to changes in the car or an electrical short.
The speedometer may need to be replaced. A bad speedometer needle may cost you much more than just the price for parts and labor.
