What the heck were they drinking back in Elizabethan and Jacobean England? Nieman Foundation at Harvard. Donate Now. Nieman News. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
For the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God.
Whether it is love or hate, man does not know; both are before him. It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.
As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath. This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that the same event happens to all. Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. But he who is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it. Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. So that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. It is for discipline that you have to endure.
So that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.
The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. The race may not always be to the swift,—all the expert opinions generally lean that way —but there is no question that in mercantile affairs the best is to the biggest.
I merely say that the most able generally get to the top, and that success, other things being equal, is the surest proof of ability. Though the race may not always be to the swift nor the battle to the strong, the odds are vastly in their favour. The race may not always be to the swift, but the times when it is not are few and far between, and in these days of keen competition he who keeps himself in closest touch with those whose work he is after is the one most likely to get it.
The center column of the page featured an article with the byline H. Because the banner was not attached to a specific article there was some ambiguity.
Indeed, Franklin P. Adams and Damon Runyon both credited Keough with this version of the saying in and , respectively. Detailed citations are given further below. Sadly, Keough died in June at the young age of By December a friend named Hugh S. The work displayed a pithy quotation from the scribe at the top of each page.
The twelfth page listed: In Franklin P. In February Adams credited Keough with a variant that matched the statement under investigation. We should never give up on ourselves or on others. In this race there are some who have made judgments about how others are running their races. We should try to understand that each person faces his own severe trials.
We know from research that people differ and vary in the amount of physical pain they can endure. What is a pinprick to one is intense pain to another. So it is with tests and trials. What is a major obstacle for one is merely a challenge to another. To the young lady who has never been very popular, who has never had many boyfriends, the loss of a special young man may be a terrible blow.
Another young lady who has had many suitors may not be able to appreciate or understand the difficulty of that experience in the life of another human being. So I pray that we might be compassionate, that we might truly have that understanding of what another person is going through, and not judge him unfairly or swiftly or unkindly.
There are some of us in this race of life at the current time for whom everything is going great. Things are wonderful. Life is easy. At those moments I would hope that we would learn to be grateful, to be humble, to be thankful that the Lord has granted us the smoothness that we may now experience.
May we not become overconfident. May we not become smug or complacent. For if we are experiencing that time in our lives, that is the time we may find the resources available to us to reach out and lend a helping hand to others. One of the great things about this race that the Lord indicated for all of us is that it does not have to be run alone.
In fact, it may well best be run with others.
